July 7, 2015 Update
I have been contacted a few times by citizens with a great question...why is the City resurfacing Getwell Rd when there are many neighborhood streets in worse condition?
The answer is addressed below by the fact that the City received federal funds that mandate where the project must occur. Generally, to qualify, these funds must be spent on arterial roads that facilitate a large traffic volume or alternative modes of transportation that benefit the public. The City adopted a formal "Street Overlay Schedule" with the FY 2015 budget that uses City funds to improve neighborhood and arterial streets. These have all been completed for this year and we will continue with an ongoing plan next year and beyond to improve streets throughout our entire City.
This Getwell project is underway now and should be completed later this month.
May 19, 2015 Update
This project is ready to happen, but we have delayed it until school is out since it involves a high school-traffic area. It will begin within a few weeks when school is out and will involve an asphalt overlay and total resurfacing of Getwell Rd between Goodman and Church Rds.
The City received Federal Aid Surface Transportation Program funds administered through MDOT which will pay 80% of the total cost. The total cost is $1,033,696 with the federal aid paying $826,956 and the City paying $206,739.
This project will improve one of our heaviest-traveled arterial streets that is in poor condition and should be completed by early July of this year.
September 26, 2014 Original Report
This project will simply provide a complete asphalt overlay of Getwell Rd from Goodman Rd south to Church Rd.
Timelines are difficult to estimate with road projects, but we expect construction to began within the next two months and be completed by early 2015.
