THE JAYCEE POOL
On any given hot, summer day in the 1970s and early 1980s, the air at this site would be filled with the sound of laughter and the smell of coconut Hawaiian Tropic. This was THE place to be in Southaven back then and you would see kids riding their bikes and skateboards from everywhere in the city to get to their favorite swimming hole. You could hear the music playing as soon as you hit Brookhaven Drive at Highway 51. The old concrete block building with roofless bathrooms opened to a large concession area with all the favorite treats. The large L-shaped pool had a long shallow area and 12-foot deep end with both a low diving board and 12-foot high dive. “Alligator Charge” was the favorite game and if you could splash the lifeguard from the high dive, then you sat out for punishment with pride.
