Let’s all end a stressful week with a little “fun time” on a Friday. I bet there are a few Southaven people who may remember either asking or being asked the question on a Friday back when, “Are you going to Funtime tonight?”
As we continue to celebrate our history with historical marker signs, soon we will install one at this special place with the following text:
“The large building at this site once housed one of the very first recreational centers in Southaven that was anchored by a movie theater, bowling alley, and skating rink named Funtime Skateland. Although the building was constructed in the early 1970s, it went to a new plateau of popularity when Herbert Jenkins opened the first skating rink in Southaven’s history in 1978. Funtime quickly earned its name as it became the place to be on Friday nights in the early 1980s. It sustained the height of its popularity throughout the decade as all-night skating events and high school dances were added to the fun. Special friends, great food, great music, strobe lighting, and carpeted, mushroom-shaped seating all spark the memories of so many unforgettable experiences lived here.”
Southaven is a great place today and although we can never go back to the special small place that we were in our early days, we can still celebrate the memories and the lasting friendships!
